IFAD Regional Director a.i of West and Central Africa (WCA) visits Cameroon

The acting Regional Director for West and Central Africa, of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Mr Sana F. K. Jatta will visit Cameroon from the 18-23 of December 2021. This visit, which is within the framework of the partnership between IFAD and Cameroon, aims to review the state of IFAD-Cameroon cooperation through consultations, as well as one-on-one meetings with senior government officials, Multi-country office (MCO) staff and development partners.

In addition, the director will hold institutional meetings and carry out field visits to exchange views with the beneficiaries of joint government and IFAD operations in Cameroon. This will help him to assess the achievements, learn about challenges in terms of consolidation and scaling up to tested and successful innovations.

IFAD is an international financial institution and a specialized United Nations agency headquartered in Rome – It has invested in rural people for more than 40 years, empowering them to reduce poverty, increase security food, improve nutrition and build resilience. Since 1978, IFAD has provided US $ 20.4 billion in grants and low-interest loans to projects that have reached some 480 million people.

In Cameroon, bilateral cooperation has been active for 40 years, through 11 development operations that have mobilized more than $ 240 million to sustainably improve the income, food and nutritional security of the rural poor, especially women and young people in 07 regions: Center, Far North, Coast, North, North-West, West, South. Over the past three years, IFAD and Cameroon have united their resources and expertise to increase investments, diversify their implementing partners, and focus their strategy on entrepreneurship and agroecology in the agricultural sectors, livestock, aquaculture and the environment. This exemplary partnership, in support of Cameroon’s National Development Strategy for 2030, has already enabled, among other things (i) the creation of more than 3,000 enterprises in the agro-pastoral and aquaculture sector, 40% of which are led by women – (ii ) the creation of  more than 8000 jobs in the agro-pastoral sector. (iii) the development of hundreds of hectares of lowland to support the production of rice and onions – (iv) the construction of dozens of stores allowing thousands of producers to store their products and access markets in the regions of the Far North, North, North West and West and (v) the training of more than 2000 professionals in the bamboo sector and the restoration by bamboo of more than one hectare of degraded land.
